Qualified Medical
Expenses Veterans Care Advisors
The veterans disability pension with aid and
attendance benefit allows you to subtract qualified
medical expenses from your income for benefit qualification.
A few of these qualified medical expenses are:
- Medicare B and D Premiums
- Supplemental medical insurance premiums
- Long term care insurance premiums
- Un-reimbursed prescription costs
- Un-reimbursed doctor and hospital chargess
- Cost of home care
- Cost of assisted living facility
- Cost of nursing home
The VA will include some qualified medical expenses as
recurring
thus allowing them to be counted going forward in determining the
monthly pension stipend. Others may be disallowed and will
need to be documented and submitted with the EVR.
Remember, the VA will look at your countable income for eligibility.
Countable income is calculated by taking your gross income
and subtracting your qualified
medical expenses. It is this adjustment that defines
your countable income. This is the income
that should be used for the qualification...not your gross income!
